Expectations-Chasing The Mirage

“What will mess you up most in life is the picture in your head of how it is supposed to be.”

Expectations are the mirage based on an image which you had envisioned at some point in time. You found yourself irresistibly drawn to these alluring expectations to fulfill them you begin to chase them the more you pursue, the more they rob your peace and happiness.

When expectations rule your life, the pressure, fear, and doubt become part of your life. You start judging yourself harshly. Your inner critic accepts nothing less. You find yourself befuddled with unmet expectations that lead to emotional breakdown and trigger anger, bitterness, jealousy, comparison, and frustration.. as you lack the energy to hold them back this inhibits you from living and enjoying the life.

Many time I observe people align their goals with these boundless expectations and keep waiting for the optimum current to come along so they can dive and swim to reach their picture-perfect destination, in that they lose many fruitful opportunities. They are so wrapped up in far away future that they lose sight of the present.

Being human it’s so difficult to get rid of expectations completely. Instead of making these expectations the base of your happiness and contentment, making small goals based on realistic situation and resources, keeping the room for uncertainty can escape you from being trapped and keep you motivated to explore and enjoy the process. Willingness to go with the flow opens you to experience the beauty of life that is beyond any expectation.

“When you release expectations, you are free to enjoy things for what they are instead of what you think they should be.”

  1. A truth expressed…I always say, not accepting leads to frustration… and even if there are expectations, what are they based on. As humans we are habit forming creatures and yet we put unannounced expectations on others without their permission. your post is thought provoking! thanks for sharing such insight

  2. Hey,

I’m working on my debut poetry book and preparing a mailing list. Would you like me to add your e-mail address please?

If so, can you share it with me?

I don’t plan to do it like hard core promotion, I will be e-mailing you privately not through any software.

I will just inform you when it’s available and when there is some huge fluctuation in price (sale etc.), as on WordPress reader, posts get lost in stampede.

I won’t be mailing you more than 4 to 5 times a year, and that’s max. Promise!

And if you want it to share it privately you can do that through contact form on my blog.

    Thank you 🙂

The reason behind disappointments is expectations that we set.

I agree that we should set realistic & small goals/ expectations 😊
